Clinical prof, assistant med prof, plastic surgery resident join UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Philip Gerald Boysen II, M.D.

Dr. Philip Gerald Boysen II, University of Queensland/Ochsner Clinical School professor and senior staff physician at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, has joined the Medical Center faculty as a professor of anesthesiology.

After receiving his B.S. in biology from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1965, Boysen earned his M.D. at the Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois, in 1969. He had a straight medicine internship at Michael Reese Medical Center, Chicago, from 1969-70 before having an internal medicine residency in the Pensacola Education Program, an affiliate of the University of Florida, and a pulmonary medicine fellowship at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, from 1974-76. He received his M.B.A. from Baker College, Flint, Michigan, in 2006.

A commander in the United States Navy, Boysen served as a designated flight surgeon from 1970-73 and in active reserve from 1977-92. He joined the University of Florida College of Medicine faculty in 1977 as an assistant professor of medicine and anesthesiology and worked his way up to associate professor of anesthesiology and medicine in 1981. He had residency training in the Department of Anesthesiology at the UF College of Medicine from 1982-84, and became a professor of anesthesiology and medicine there in 1987 In 1994 he moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as professor and chair of anesthesiology and professor of medicine from 1994-2006 and as executive associate dean for graduate medical education and professor of anesthesiology and medicine from 2006-12.

An active member of numerous professional societies, Boysen has served in a number of leadership positions for several, including the American Association of Medical Colleges, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, among others. The author or coauthor of more than 65 articles published in refereed journals, more than 80 competitive abstracts, 15 refereed editorials and invited articles and more than 50 book contributions, Boysen has presented more than 35 papers and six exhibits at scientific meetings nationally. A highly sought speaker, he has given more than 250 invited presentations nationally.

Jared M. Davis, M.D.

Dr. Jared Davis, a recent graduate of the University of Louisville Plastic Surgery Residency Program, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of surgery and plastic surgery residency assistant program director.

Davis received his B.A. in history from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in 2006, followed by his M.D. from Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, in 2010. Next, he completed general surgery residency from 2010-15 and plastic surgery residency from 2015-18 at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. While in Louisville, he also earned his M.B.A. at the University of Louisville in 2018, served as a staff physician providing coverage to rural emergency rooms with Inspire Medical, and served as a staff general surgeon at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center.

He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and the American Medical Association and is a candidate member of the Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Davis has several peer-reviewed publications. His research interests include surgical skill development and breast cancer reconstruction.

Hareesh Kumar Gundlapalli, M.B.B.S.

Dr. Hareesh Kumar Gundlapalli, an assistant professor of medicine at Loyola University Medical Center/Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, Illinois, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of medicine.

While earning his M.B.B.S. at Kurnool Medical College, India, from 2002-08, Gundlapalli had an internship at Government General Hospital, Kurnool, from 2007-08. He then practiced independently in Kurnool from 2008-10 before pursuing an internal medicine internship and residency training from 2011-14 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham-Montgomery. He served as a hospitalist at Willamette Valley Medical Center, McMinnville, Oregon, from 2014-17 and as an assistant professor of medicine at Loyola since 2017.

An active member of the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association, Gundlapalli has authored or coauthored six scientific articles and posters. His research interests include diastolic heart failure and in-hospital readmission.
